Ben Okri was born in Minna, Nigeria, to Grace and Silver Okri. His father, a member of the Urhobo people, moved the family to London when Okri was less than two years old to study law. Okri attended primary school in Peckham before the family returned to Nigeria in 1966. He began secondary education at Urhobo College in Warri in 1968, where his exposure to the Nigerian Civil War and peers who claimed to have visions of spirits inspired his fiction. At age 14, after being rejected from a physics programme, Okri decided poetry was his calling; he wrote articles and short stories, some of which were published in women's journals and evening papers. Criticism of the government in his early work allegedly led to his name being placed on a death list, forcing him to leave Nigeria. In 1978, Okri moved to England and studied comparative literature at Essex University with a Nigerian government grant. When funding fell through, he became homeless, living in parks or with friends, a period he called 'very, very important' to his work. His debut novel, Flowers and Shadows, was published in 1980. From 1983 to 1986, he served as poetry editor of West Africa magazine and contributed to the BBC World Service. His reputation was secured with The Famished Road (1991), written while renting a flat in Notting Hill from publisher Margaret Busby. Okri has rejected the label 'magical realism' for his work, describing it instead as obeying 'dream logic' and exploring the question 'what is reality?'
